Focused work sessions: design the session before trying harder

Focus improves when the task, stopping point, materials and distraction rules are decided before the session begins.

Define a concrete target

“Study” or “write” is open-ended. “Review sections 1–2 and answer five practice questions” gives the session a visible finish.

Prepare the workspace

Open the needed files, gather materials and close unrelated tabs before the session. Small setup decisions consume attention once work begins.

Make distractions less convenient

Silence nonessential notifications, move the phone away when practical and keep a scrap list for unrelated thoughts that can be handled later.

Close the loop

At the end, record what changed and the next action. This makes the next session easier to start.
